What’s Happening with US
(Sept 2010)
Did You Know?
University Settlement’s Employment and Training Department is a resource centre which provides pre-employment assessment, job search resources and tools, skills training, counseling and volunteer opportunities. Helping people prepare for and obtain employment has been a part of our history since 1914 when Dr. Norman J. Ware started at University Settlement. Dr. Ware had a particular interest in the working man and labour conditions and took on advocacy work for workers in the areas. He also conducted research on other employment agencies and laid plans to start an employment agency that resulted in some employment placements. University Settlement through Dr. Ware was involved in the founding of the Neighbourhood Worker’s Association which made urgent recommendations to the city of Toronto’s board of control included a variety of public works be undertaken to provide employment. Much like the stimulus packages of today!!
During the 1930s, St Christopher House and University Settlement jointly held open houses for unemployed men on Saturday evening providing games, refreshments and opportunity to network. By 1937 the average attendance was 250 and included women. In the early 40s, University Settlement opened up their offices for factory workers to have lunch. Today, University Settlement assists over 1,100 individuals, 78% of whom are newcomers, each year through our employment program and helps over 175 individuals obtain employment. As part of our work with the City of Toronto Social Services we host an annual Job Fair to connect unemployed individuals with potential employers. Please join us on September 14th, 2010-details below.

The Opening will include guest speakers, elected officials, performances, as well as food and will be open to the over 30,000 individuals we serve each year. Your artwork would receive a wide viewing from the community. Artists will have the opportunity to meet and greet the community and to discuss their work. Themes for the art exhibition could be: stories of settlement, new life, new beginnings, family, growth, community, trees and roots. Click here for more information.

September's Featured Artist
University Settlement has initiated a number of arts programs throughout the agency in honour of our 100th anniversary to celebrate, acknowledge and highlight the role that University Settlement has played in people’s lives. Jane and her art work are highlighted for this month’s art feature.
Jane is a member of our Urban Girls Youth Group. She is 18 years old has a two-year-old daughter and has not finished high school. Jane lives at home with her dad (who is a single parent) and four other siblings.
Jane joined our Urban Girls Youth Group in January of 2009. She was not in school or working and was struggling with her life. Within a few weeks, our Youth Coordinator got to know Jane and understood where Jane was coming from. Together with the group, Jane received enough encouragement from the other young ladies in the program that she went back to school to receive her high school diploma. Jane continues to participate in the Urban Girls Youth Group and to give back to her peers.
Please see Jane's work here. All of our featured artists will be highlighted in our 100th anniversary art exhibit and party in November 2010.
